The alkaline diet suggests eating a diet rich in alkaline foods while limiting acid food consumption. Advocates propose the diet promotes the best pH balance for the body.
Having followed this diet for more than two months I agree that it has improved my overall health and well being. The acid alkaline diet is very close to what many of us would regard as a normal healthy diet. The acid/alkaline classification offers one possible explanation of why increasing the amount of alkaline foods in our diet is good for us.
Available on the internet is a wide variety of information regarding what is and isn’t an alkaline food. Some charts suggest that only some fruits are alkaline forming while other information proposes that all fruits are alkaline. Most charts appear to agree that all vegetables are alkaline foods. It may not be completely accurate to say that all fruit and vegetables are alkaline foods while almost everything else is an acid food. But it is a straight forward guideline to follow. The alkaline diet is not only for vegetarians and vegans. It simply advocates increasing the amount of fruit and vegetables in our diet which is a good step to take for all us carnivores!
Eating an alkaline breakfast is a great way to start the day by getting plenty of nutrition and giving our bodies an alkaline boost. If we say alkaline foods are fruit and vegetables, an alkaline breakfast would be a breakfast packed with fruit and vegetables.
Transitioning to an alkaline diet, starting with one meal and eating what you normally would at other times makes the change easier. I started with breakfast and as I began to feel my health improving, in particular with regard to my energy levels, I started to increase the amount of fruit and vegetables in my other meals.
In a report titled Dietary Guidelines for Americans 2005, it recommends consuming nine servings of fruit and vegetables every day. An alkaline breakfast puts you well on your way to reaching this target. Nine servings may appear to be quite a high number. When I started my alkaline diet, my aim was five servings of fruit and vegetables a day. One of the best ways in my opinion to greatly increase your consumption is to make your own fruit and vegetable juices. Two juices a day with a with at least three pieces of fruit and vegetables gives you a minimum of six servings. Then it’s easy to reach double figures with a couple of bits of fruit and some vegetables at meal times.
Here are some ideas of what constitutes an alkaline breakfasts:
Carrot (3) and ginger juice followed by a banana or two. Grapefruit (1 or 2) and a large glass of water. Apple (1 or 2), spinach (20+ stalks) and ginger juice with scrambled egg whites.
For those without a fruit and vegetable juicer it is easy to eat an alkaline breakfast. One idea is to grate some of carrots with a twist of lemon juice.
One way to improve overall your health and well being is by starting the day with an alkaline breakfast.
