          Chronic fatigue is becoming a way of life for many people in today’s fast paced society. We blame it on many things; increased workloads, longer working hours, longer commutes and, not incidentally, on the increased stress brought about by all of these things.           The Effects of Acidity and Alkalinity on the Body

          To understand the difference between acidity and alkalinity one must first understand what an alkali is. An alkali is the ionic salt of an alkaline earth metal or earth metal element. These salts have a pH of greater than 7.0 and easily dissolve in water On the other hand, something that is acidic is derived from an acid; a chemical mixture which has a pH of less than 7.0 and, when it’s dissolved in water, it produces a compound with a high hydrogen ion activity. When we take into account the fact that everything that we eat or metabolize produces either alkaline or acidic bases into the bloodstream depending on its constituent components, as well as the fact that the human body achieves optimum performance at a pH level between 7.33 and 7.4, it makes sense to say that a diet that leans towards alkaline foods makes the most sense when we’re looking to achieve optimum health.

          If that is not enough, consider the fact that the human body is composed of roughly 75% water. Alkaline bases dissolve easily in, and are easily absorbed by water, unlike acidic bases which, while they break down in water, leave what is known as an acidic residue which can build up and eventually cause bodily functions to slow down (hence that tired feeling) and sometimes even to malfunction or shut down altogether. Also, if the body’s pH goes too far below 7.0 (acidic) the body will find a way to counter it. It will borrow from internal alkalinity sources, usually minerals such as calcium, magnesium or potassium which it will leech from the bones. Depletion of calcium is one of the key causes of osteoporosis. Plaque is another problem of a diet high in acidic foods. Plaque can take the form of plaque on the teeth but also plaque in the arteries, which is a primary contributor to heart attacks.

          But even without the major concerns like osteoporosis or heart disease, high acid levels have been shown to encourage the growth of bacterial, viral or even fungal infections, all things that we could easily keep under control if we were to maintain the optimum pH balance. Keeping all of this in mind it an alkaline diet may sound perfectly reasonable, but there is just one major problem; the average diet of western society produces high levels of acid. It is a diet that we have grown accustomed to over the last 100 years and which takes some determination to change, but once it has been adopted has proven to yield phenomenal improvements to one’s overall health.

          What Constitutes an Alkaline Diet?

          There are two ways to increase one’s pH balance: eating more alkaline-rich foods, and decreasing acidic-based foods. The optimum solution is of course to do both until your body has maintained the optimum pH balance. But first it is important to know what your body’s current pH balance is. This is easy enough to do by purchasing urine or saliva test strips at most any drug store. Remember, you are aiming for a pH balance between 7.33 and 7.4. Roughly speaking, a balance between alkaline and acidic can be maintained by eating approximately 75% alkaline-rich foods and 25% acidic foods. High alkaline foods include things like most all vegetables and fruits (though it is recommended that fruits be eaten in moderation), non-dairy and non-meat proteins (with the exception of cottage cheese, chicken breasts and eggs) and drinks such as koumbacha, herbal or green tea.

          Unfortunately, high acidic based foods include things like all meats, almost all grains, sugars and sweeteners, butter, cheeses and all alcoholic drinks (complete lists of high-alkaline and high acid foods can be found online).

          Strangely enough, even water is not immune to the western tendency towards acidity. Tap water in particular has been shown to have a high acid content thanks to the additives that are put into the water to make it safe for drinking. Drinking bottled water or water that has been ionized by a water ionizer such as those made by Chason Water have been shown to bring the pH level of water to a more alkaline level.

          A Balancing Act

          The good news is that while we may have subjected our bodies to years of acid abuse; abuse that is coming to light as increased infections and chronic fatigue; we can undo the damage by bringing the body’s pH balance back into alignment. Optimum health is a delicate balancing act, but with practice, all of us can learn to walk the wire.

              There are a lot of crazy diets on the market that promise to help you lose weight. Unfortunately, if you look at the nutritional value of some of these diets, they are often severely lacking. If you need to lose weight, you should do it while eating a diet that is good for your body, so that you will become healthier instead of just thinner. An alkaline diet is a healthy approach to weight loss that will keep you energized, healthy, and motivated to drop the pounds.

              Understanding the Alkaline Diet

              An alkaline diet is different from other diets, because it focuses primarily on the effect that foods have on the acidity or the alkalinity of the body. When foods are digested and metabolized by the body, they produce what is commonly referred to as an “alkaline ash” or “acid ash.” The original pH of the food doesn’t factor into this final effect within the body. In fact, some of the most acidic foods such as citrus fruits actually produce an alkaline effect when eaten. When more alkaline foods are eaten as opposed to acid foods, the pH of the body can be adjusted to an optimum level of approximately 7.3. While this is not extremely alkaline, it is enough to reap many healthful benefits.

              Using an Alkaline Diet for Weight Loss

              Many people attempt fad diets or those which promise quick results in an attempt to lose weight. These diets might produce results in the short term, but over time this can be a very unhealthy way to lose weight. Additionally, many people gain the weight back as soon as they go off their strict diet. When an acid diet is used for weight loss and control, it is more of a lifestyle change. The results may not happen overnight, but it’s more likely that the weight will not be gained back. An alkaline diet is rich in foods which are naturally low in calories, such as most vegetables and fruits. Many of the foods that are high in fat and calories are also acidifying, so when these foods are removed from the diet, a natural and healthy weight loss will occur. These foods include red meat, fatty foods, high fat dairy products such as whole milk and cheese, sugar, soda, and alcohol. Once you stop eating these foods, your body will be much healthier, less acid, and you’ll also lose weight in the process. Because the diet is healthy, you can stick with it long term. In fact, many people who start an alkaline diet solely for the purpose of losing weight find many other benefits. An increased energy level, resistance to illness, and an overall improvement in health and well-being are among the many benefits you can experience on an alkaline diet.

              How to Start an Alkaline Diet

              Many people find that it is easier to start on an alkaline diet by making small changes. Start by slowly reducing the amount of meat, sugar and fat in your diet, while adding fresh fruits, vegetables, healthy fats such as olive oil, almonds, soy products, and natural sweeteners such as Stevia. You’ll find over time, your tastes will change and you’ll actually start to prefer this kind of diet.

This will neutralize the acids created when your body metabolizes acidic food, pesticides, and other contaminants.  Eliminate the highly acidic drinks you’ve been drinking, such as soda.                     Note for those not familiar with the pH scale

                    The pH scale measures whether or not a substance is an acidic or alkaline: An acid has a pH of less than 7. The lower the pH the stronger the acid. pH 7 is neutral. An alkaline has a pH of more than 7. The highest pH is 14, which is the strongest alkaline.

                    You are what you eat?

                    -This saying is not accurate. It’s not really true either. However, what is accurate and true is ‘You are what you digest and absorb.’

                    Take, for instance, the example of fruits. They have an acid pH, but after eating and digesting, many types of fruits absorbed into the body then become alkaline. They give an alkaline ash residue.

                    Any foods that produce an alkaline ash residue when absorbed into the body are called alkaline foods. Foods that give an acid ash residue when absorbed into the body are called acid foods. It is important to distinguish the differences when choosing a healthy diet.

                    Getting it right…

                    Ideally, for optimum nutrition a good diet should strike a balance between 80%/20% alkaline/acid foods respectively. Ideally, your pH should be around 7.4.Before I list what foods are available to strike this right ratio in favour of the alkaline diet, it has been well noted that many people are out of balance. The reason being that there has been a rise over the years of not so good, or even downright poor nutrition, such as those containing trans-fats, certain saturated fats, refined sugars, starchy carbohydrates…This has given rise to higher acid foods and a predominantly more acid ash residue in the body. It comes as no surprise to me that the rise in acid foods correlates with the increase of the major life-threatening illnesses, cardiovascular disease, cancer and diabetes…over the last 60 years or so.

                    So what are the possible benefits of an alkaline diet?

                    v Feel more alive and alert

                    v More able to concentrate better

                    v Far less prone to mood swings…

                    v Need less sleep

                    v Feel more willing to do exercise

                    v Serves as a strong prevention against disease

                    v Slows down the ageing process

                    The Alkaline diet Includes: The vegetables Spinach, asparagus, broccoli, carrots, celery, cucumber, lettuce, courgette, cabbage, greens, swede, squash (summer, butternut, yellow etc), peppers, chilli, tomato, onion, garlic, chickpeas, pinto beans, kidney beans, spring onions, root ginger, and aquatic vegetables such as sea kelp and sea dulse.

                    Salad Recommendations

                    Avocado, celery, cucumber, dandelion greens, kale, lettuce, rocket, spinach, walnuts, almonds, macadamia nuts…i.e. any nuts accept cashews and peanuts. Seeds of different sorts such as pumpkin, sunflower, sesame, flax or any sprouted seed… and watercress. Some Herbs and Spices…

                    Basil, parsley, coriander, ginger, garlic and dandelion greens…

                    How strict are you each time your kids ask for soft drinks or junk food when you take them grocery shopping with you? How often do you say yes, even though you know it is not the best option for developing good eating habits? Sometimes we make choices thinking a little junk won’t hurt, and rarely do we think our grocery choices are adding to the toxic homes challenge.

                    The truth is, most people are aware that soft drinks and cookies are not healthy food choices for us. However, most parents do not realize the compounding effects of the entire menu, offered to families each week. The majority of children and families today are consuming highly acidic diets, without even knowing it.

                    You’re probably wondering what an acidic diet is. First, the human body needs to maintain a pH level of around 7.365 for optimal health. The reference of pH is measuring acid and alkaline, with an average range of zero (acid) to fourteen (alkaline), with neutral at seven.. We are designed to function in an alkaline state. If you feed your children a diet rich in red meats, white breads or yeast breads, white rice, hard cheese like cheddar, apples, most citrus fruits, or if they drink a lot of sodas, sports drinks, fruit juices, they are consuming a high acid diet. So many families today focus more on poultry instead of red meats, but poultry is also acidic. There are great resources available today for acidic and alkaline food types on the Internet.

                    How does an acidic diet contribute to the toxic homes problem? Due to the fact that our bodies perform best when we are slightly alkaline, if we consume high amounts of acid, our body has to work harder to eliminate the acid waste. Many people are living with acidosis, which happens when there is high levels of acid within body fluids. Research has proven that disease thrives in an acid environment. Even weight loss is more challenging when the body is acidic.

                    So when you think you are feeding your family a healthy diet, and adding a few snacks here and there won’t hurt, you are actually creating a bigger toxic homes issue, because you just added more acidic snacks on top of the acidic dinner they just ate, not to mention that fruit juice they had at school for lunch. If your body is not performing at it’s best, then it weakens, and has to fight harder to protect itself from other foreign invaders, which can be a cause of chronic illnesses.

                    So what is the solution? You want to introduce more alkaline foods into your kids diet such as salad greens, plenty of veggies like broccoli, asparagus, potatoes, spinach, and fruits like bananas, or nuts like almonds, to name a few. Proper hydration is vital in reducing the effects of acidic food. The average person should drink at least half of their body weight in ounces of water per day (150 pound person should drink 75 ounces.)

                    Not all water is created equal, so you want to be selective with your drinking sources. If you jumped on the bottled water band wagon, because you were under the impression it is better for you, you might want to rethink that. The sad truth is, most bottled waters test below 7.0 on the pH scale, which is on the acid side.. Since pH levels change with time, exposure to light, and vibration, even if the water is bottled at a netural level, chances are by the time you open the bottle, it is already acidic. Not to mention, studies have revealed many contaminants in bottled water, but we’ll save that for another story. Tap water can be an option, but you want to test it first, and make sure it is free of chlorine.

                    The best solution that I have found to combat the acidic toxic homes problem, is through proper diet, and having an ionized, alkaline water system installed right at my tap. Due to the fact that we don’t have year round access to freshly delivered high alkaline type foods, the easiest and most convenient choice, is definitely the ionized alkaline water technology, not to mention we like the antioxidant properties of the water with the push of a button!

Yet, there are still people who are aware how to have a healthy diet. The food we eat signifies our output in life and it determines how well we are, physically, mentally and emotionally. Alkaline and acid diet along with exercise is the best thing to do for a better lifestyle.

                    After the foods have been metabolized by our body, residues are produced depending on the alkalinity and acidity of the foods that we eat. Therefore, foods are categorized as alkaline and acid based. Alkaline-based foods are those that produce alkaline ash residue while acid-based foods generate acid residue.

                    It is of great importance that we know how to make a balanced intake of alkaline-based and acid-based foods. It is because it will determine how well we will be able to maintain good health. Having a likable health condition does not only mean having a great body, but also having an impeccable mind. And, it is more often that if you have a well-loved body, then you also have a desirable mentality.

                    Here are the benefits of a balanced intake of alkaline and acid foods:

                    1. You will be free from illnesses, even simple or serious diseases. It is because, by having a balanced intake, you would be able to boost your immune system. And if you have a healthy immune system, you will less likely to be weak and get sick.
                    2. You can lose weight with this diet and the possibility of getting obese will be lowered. Hence, you will be less prone to illness.
                    3. You will be able to think appropriately. If you have a balanced diet, the cells which are responsible for your brains’ function will also be well taken care of and in turn your mind will be healthier.
                    4. You will be able to enjoy your life to the fullest! Because you can develop a healthy mind and a nourished body, then, you will enjoy your life. You will not be limited to whatever you want to do. Some people are not able to enjoy because they are weak due to their illness. By benefiting happiness from each activity, you are able to have a fulfillment in life.

                    The amount of consumption of acid and alkaline based foods relies on each person’s body need. But the average percentage of alkaline intake should be 75-80% and 20-25% of acid-rich foods.

                    I have a friend who grows figs in her backyard. She has three different Fig varieties! She also proudly tells me that her figs are organic as well. All young trees, most of her fruit comes from the smallest tree of all. Its the Brown Turkey, that small tree produces a truckload of fruit. The sweeter Black Jack, and, Black Mission fig trees are harvest lean, but wow are they good and delicious! Touted as the most alkaline of fruit, figs are one of the safest treats the body can have.

                    Why do we distinguish between alkaline and acidic foods? Because cancer cells are smart; they love acidic foods. This article is an attempt to promote eating alkaline foods versus the acidic ones. A list of alkaline foods follows for your convenience. Scroll down below, the list of alkaline foods is a large list, and, surprisingly varied. What a pleasure to recognize how tasty alkaline foods can be! Now, because it is relevant to this conversation, we will list the acidic foods, and, spices as well. First, we need to get educated. It is not surprising at all to see how meats are acidic. Lemons, which we think is acidic, produces the opposite because it helps in the digestion of food, and, drink. The end result is alkaline. The citric acid in lemons produces an alkaline effect in the system.

                    In Chinese medicine, we are aware of temperature. Food, drink, and herbs, have an intrinsic temperature. For example, Green tea is cold; it is good to use with inflammations, or, a fever. Cinnamon, a cold beer, medication, recreational drugs are hot. Note that a food’s acid or alkaline forming tendency in the body has nothing to do with the actual pH of the food itself. Back to very acidic lemons whose end products produced after digestion and assimilation are very alkaline. Lemons are alkaline forming in the body. On the other hand, meat will test alkaline before digestion; it leaves a very acidic residue in the body so, like most animal products, meat is very acid-forming. However I recommend fish. Nourish your kidneys, whose pathway includes bones, marrow, and is manifested in your hair. I use salmon (Oh no! It’s on the acidic list!) for it’s Omegas to work on my heart, my skin, and maintain the color of my hair. It is most important to balance one’s diet by consuming more foods from the alkaline list.

                    There are several versions of the acidic and alkaline food chart to be found in different books and on various reliable sources on the Net. There are foods that are sometimes attributed to the acidic side of the chart and sometimes to the alkaline side. Remember, you don’t need to adhere strictly to the alkaline side of the chart, just make sure a good percentage of the foods you eat is alkaline. It’s about balance.                     CERVICAL CANCER

                    Cervical cancer or cancer of the cervix is a major concern for many women. The development of cervical cancer is slow and occurs over a period of years.                     Maria Locsin, L. Ac., Dipl. Ac., earned her Bachelor of Arts in English Literature

                    from the College of the Assumption in Manila, Philippines (1976), and, a masters in

                    Traditional Chinese Medicine and Herbology from Emperor’s College, in Santa Monica,

                    California (2001). Maria is certified by the California State Board of Consumer

                    Affairs, and, The National Certification Commission for Acupuncture, and, Oriental

                    Medicine (2000). She is licensed to practice Acupuncture, Herbology, and, Chinese

                    Medicine. Maria also completed postgraduate studies in Solid Waste and Recycling

                    Programs from The University of California at Los Angeles, (1990). Still a student

                    of Chinese Medicine Maria treated hundreds of patients and held supervisory duties

                    providing evaluations and guidance to Level I interns. Just into her first year of

                    studies, one of her greatest accomplishments was treating her bedridden father, who

                    was able to walk for the first time in years.


                    Maria has been passionately practicing Chinese Medicine since 2003. Fluent in three

                    languages, her recent experience with Clinica Medica San Miguel includes helping

                    seniors, and, the Spanish-speaking population with nutritional counseling and

                    acupuncture. She takes pride in helping “my seniors of Huntington Park”. She also was on Spanish TV and radio, marketing Clinica San Miguel and preaching the benefits of Oriental Medicine. Today she shares a clinic, treating various diseases, and, ailments with other accomplished Acupuncturists in West Los Angeles. Her Chinese Medicine “ministry” sometimes takes her to homes of patients who are homebound.
